| Part 7 ~ Anchorage to Dawson
Our Cabin in Dawson. The head of the bed was about 6 inches lower then the foot! The whole floor slanted. This happens due to creating a structure direct on the ground. There is permafrost underneath and the building is warmer than the soil, so it melts the permafrost after time, and the building then begins to sink. Most of the Dawson structures are being raised with an air space between the ground and the building, so to avoid this problem. This was a very common problem throughout the frigid north. |
