Part 3
Haines, Alaska to Fairbanks

We arrived at Haines on June 12. In and around Haines we visited Chilkat State Park, Chilkoot Lake, Ft. Seward, and Tsirku Salmon Cannery (collection of restored historical canning machinery).

We drove to Chilkat State Park where we looked across the bay to Davidson Glacier. Fort Seward is in Haines although they all seem to be private residence or hotels at this time. We drove up to Kilchat Park to look for bears and to see the salmon. While there we saw a person doing studies on the salmon she netted the salmon. We saw no bears. We walked around town; we went to the museum. At 8:00 we went to a tour at the Tsirku Canning Factory. After the tour we drove back out to Chilkoot Lake looking for and again finding no bear. However we did see many salmon nesting in the stream. As we drove out of there we decided to take the left then go to the end of the road which was less than one mile and the result of that, saw two bear coming along the bay across the road in front of us.

Leaving Haines, we took the highway over the Chilkoot Pass into British Columbia and Yukon Territory. We spend a night in Beaver Creek where we attended a dinner theatre of a loose history of Yukon Territory. Next day we headed out for Fairbanks and points North.
