Alaska2000Mile Marker 48, Chilkat Pass, British Columbia, in route from Haines to Yukon Territory, Canada. History for Milemarker 48. The road was built in the 1940s by the United States and Canada to move troops to the Aleutian Islands. It fell into disrepair until 1948, when United States and Canada rerouted and reworked the road. From 1963 to 1974 five checkpoints were on the road for travelers to check in. If they did not make the next check point, a search party was sent out. |
